Structure and cation distribution of new ternary vanadates FeMg V O 2 3 11 and FeZn V O

FeMg V O crystals grown from a MgO/Fe O /V O melt crystallize in the triclinic space group P-1 with parameters: a56.434(1) 2 3 11 2 3 2 5 ̊ ̊ ̊ A, b56.806(1) A, c510.085(1) A, a597.44(1)8, b5103.44(1)8, g5101.56(1)8 and Z52. FeZn V O crystals grown from a 2 3 11 ̊ ̊ ̊ ZnO/Fe O /V O melt also crystallize in P-1 with similar parameters: a56.455(1) A, b56.834(1) A, c59.988(1) A, a597.65(1)8, 2 3 2 5 b5102.61(1)8, g5101.26(1)8 and Z52. Both are isostructural with GaZn V O , and susceptibility measurements reveal that all iron is 2 3 11 5 31 21 31 high spin d . In FeMg V O , Fe is distributed non-statistically with Mg on octahedral and bipyramidal sites. In FeZn V O , Fe 2 3 11 2 3 11 21 is found only on the octahedral sites and Zn exclusively occupies the bipyramidal sites. 2000 Published by Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
